Part P - what should you know

Part P is a specific section of the Building Regulations for England and Wales that relates to electrical installations in domestic properties. If you intend to carry out electrical work in your home and/or garden and you live in England and Wales, you must follow the requirements set out in Part P to ensure that you are complying with the law. These rules are designed to ensure that electrical work is safe.
Under these rules you will have to make sure that the relevant building control body has been notified of the proposed electrical installation work, unless the work is to be undertaken by a person or organisation registered with a Part P self-certification scheme. Electrical work that will need notification includes:
- A complete new installation or rewire.
- Installation of renewable sources of energy, such as a photovoltaic power supply.
- Power or control wiring for a new central heating system.
- Installation of a new final circuit, such as for a shower, cooker or lighting.
As rules and regulations are complex, we are happy for you to contact us for further advice and guidance.
